Switches and buttons come in many sizes, shapes, and colors. Individuals who have limited physical movement or neurological involvement need a control that is easily activated. From Adaptivation, Pal Pads are pressure-activated membrane switches requiring the slightest touch, only 2 ounces (57 g), of force). It does not matter whether the force comes from directly above or at a shallow angle. With their standard 35-mm connector, Pal Pads can be used with any communication aid or battery-operated assistive device. Though the switches are approximately only one-tenth inch (3 mm) thick, they are highly durable, tolerating rough use. Thanks to their foam rubber backing, they are not only easily attached, but also resist slipping.
Furthermore, as they are silent, Pal Pads are ideal for persons who are easily distracted by audible clicks.
Available at our Technology Lending Center, Pal Pads come in three sizes: large, 4.5″ x 6″ (114 x 152 mm); small, 2.5″ x 4″ (62 x 100 mm); and mini 2″ x 2″ (51 x 51 mm). They come in five colors: red, yellow, green, blue, purple, and black. This allows one to tell different functions apart when it is necessary install more than one switch at a time. And, recently, a glow-in-the-dark version was introduced. Though it works the same way as other Pal Pad switches, the glow-in-the-dark switch can be easier to identify when there is little available light.
