Ergonomic Pens Are the Write Stuff

Among the ergonomic pens available at the Technology Lending Center are the EASYoriginal (LEFT) and ErgoSof (RIGHT)

Sometimes, an assistive technology (AT) solution is relatively simple. In addition, in this space, we have featured AT solutions borrowed from the world at large. The EASYergonomics Expert Pen line is one such example, “one of the many devices or technology for everyday purposes,” according to Dave Lam, Technology Lending Center Coordinator. Ever resourceful, our AT Specialists “repurpose the technology for specific uses, for example, students with a learning disability who are better with auditory learning.” Excellent examples are ergonomic pens that children learning to write often use. People with physical disabilities often have challenges with fine-motor control as well.

STABILO EASYoriginal

The STABILO EASYoriginal is a refillable pen with a curved handle that fits in the palm of the hand and a recessed nonslip center grip, all of which minimize cramps and muscle tiredness. The symmetrical design of the EASYoriginal offers left-handed people all the benefits of its ergonomic design. STABILO offers the EASYoriginal in a variety of bright, cheerful solid colors, as well marbled and metallic designs.

Among the other ergonomic products Stabilo UK produces are the EASYergo, a mechanical pencil; EASYcolors, colored pencils; EASYgraph, a traditional pencil; EASYbirdy, a fountain pen.

PenAgain ErgoSof

Also available through our Technology Lending Center is the ErgoSof. The manufacturer, PenAgain, points out that pens shaped like sticks are inexpensive to buy (and make), but these “have no regard for the shape of your hand.” These commonplace pens rely on the force of one’s grip, which is not workable for people whose physical disability challenges their fine-motor or muscle control. The Y- or wishbone-shaped design of the ErgoSof pen supports the wrist to apply the needed pressure to write. The entire arm rather than just the hand or fingers are engaged. Gripping surfaces on the shaft enhance writing posture.
