You have found that piece of assistive technology…. And, if you are from New Jersey, maybe you took it for a free “test drive” at our Technology Lending Center. Then comes that sticker shock. Fortunately, in New Jersey and the greater Philadelphia area, one can purchase good used AT and home medical equipment at an affordable price. Goodwill Home Medical Equipment, now in a new location in Bellmawr (Camden County), has an excellent selection of items in very good condition. Other Goodwill stores throughout the store have other household goods.
According to Goodwill, “Estimates indicate that 50 million people in the U.S.A. are without health insurance. Approximately 1.4 million New Jerseyans are included in that group.” Goodwill adds, “Even for those with health coverage, strict rules and guidelines can limit access to essential equipment needed for rehabilitation or ongoing medical conditions.”
The range of products at Goodwill Home Medical is indeed large, from incontinence products to bath and shower safety and accessibility hardware to walking aids all the way up to large items such as hospital beds & lifts and wheelchairs and scooters. A recent article in the Philadelphia Inquirer claims, “The this store’s medical equipment is second-hand, but its customer service is first-class.” Indeed, the family of one of our clients, Mikayla J., found just what they were looking for.
And for anyone who has assistive technology and home medical equipment they no longer need, Goodwill gladly accepts donations, to pass on the benefits to fellow New Jersey residents.
